Oprah spent the first years of her life in rural Mississippi with her grandmother, Hattie Mae LeeAt age six, she was sent to live with her mother, Vernita Lee, in Wisconsin where she worked as a housemaidOprah recalled Vernita’s roommate was a light-skinned black woman who took an instant dislike to her because of her dark complexion The future queen of daytime TV said she was forced to sleep on a porch while her light-skinned half-sister slept indoors
