Living true to yourself. Grooming a girl is like watering your neigbor’s garden-Indian proverb

I read a quote last week which state “grooming a girl is like watering your neighbor’s garden.” And my mind has not rested ever since. So, does the girl child belong to your neighbor?

  1. ‘Grooming a girl synonymous to watering your neighbor’s garden’. This is a typical African assertion. The sense behind it is that since girls will get to maturity and get married to someone else, all their own lifestyle and labour will eventually go to the husband and little back to her parents. Because of this, some people think that it’s not worth while investing in a girl child. On the other hand they believe the boy child will always look back and take care of his parents and family.

  2. Many women in Cameroon are primary caregivers. It is sad that generations have come to pass and people dont realize their mother’s and sisters are their garden
